Kim Perkins, SC Music Lessons LLC Instructor - Pianist and Harpist
Growing up in a musical family, Kim began playing piano at a young age and was classically trained and taught.  Later, as an adult, Kim was first exposed to the beauty of the Celtic harp at a Shakespearean performance and was immediately captivated by the instrument.  She purchased her own harp and drew upon her piano playing talents to begin her journey with Celtic harp in professional and personal study.  She has now performed for many years at weddings, professional and private events.

With a Masters Degree in Elementary Education, Kim taught in the public schools for many years before switching from public teaching to homeschooling her son. With her son now in middle school, Kim actively teaches not only him, but also tutors and teaches both privately and in homeschool co-ops. Combining her love of music with her love of teaching, Kim has taught piano for the past five years and at multiple requests from listeners, is excited to share her skills on the Celtic harp as well.

Kim brings her artistic musical talent to the Lowcountry Pianist & Company team and performs as both a soloist and collaborative artist on Celtic harp for their events.

Kim's Teaching Style:

Kim teaches her students with enthusiasm and joy, while expecting her students to work and learn to the best of their abilities.  She teaches her students to read music but also to practice learning tunes "by ear" so that they have a well rounded relationship to music and to what they are hearing. Kim also encourages her students to eventually write their own tunes; writing down their own ideas on musical staff paper further cements the student's understanding of theory, music notation and style!

Info about Celtic Harps:
Since Celtic harps range in size both in weight and height as well as number of strings, it is important to choose the size and octave range that best suits you or your student's style/needs. Kim plays all sizes of Celtic harps; pictured here is her 26 string "lap" harp (11 pounds), as well as her full size, 36 string "floor" harp (50 pounds).  She is very happy to meet with you to help you decide which kind of harp is best for you!
