Join Our Team

My name is Holly Slice and I’m the owner of SC Music Lessons. This page was created for music educators in order to give a brief overview of the company. Whether you are personally looking to increase your own studio or you need a quality referral source, I hope you will keep our company in mind.

As a short background, I am a musician myself, playing multiple instruments, but my primary instrument is piano. I’m from the Upstate and moved to the Lowcountry to study music therapy at Charleston Southern University. Now, I primarily work as a church musician, piano teacher, and entrepreneur. In addition to SC Music Lessons, I’m the owner of Lowcountry Pianist & Company which I launched in 2016. In 2019, we had over 600 performances in one year and it’s been a joy to see that company grow.

In the fall of 2020, after seeing a need for quality music instruction and receiving many inquiries, I launched SC Music Lessons. My desire is for this company to gain reputability, eventually becoming the “go to” resource for private lessons in our state.
Below I've shared frequently asked questions I receive from potential instructors. I hope the information will be helpful to you as you determine if you'd like to apply to join our team!

As always, my door is always open. Feel free to email or call with any additional questions you may have.

Thank you!

How is the company structured?

SC Music Lessons LLC’s Responsibilities:
  • * Completes a background check on each SC Music Lessons LLC instructor
  • Maintains commercial general liability insurance, providing a COI when requested
  • Connects students with instructor in their area
  • Handles all billing and consistent, long-term scheduling
  • Provides resources and ongoing support as needed for both clients and instructors

Instructor's Responsibilities:
  • Teaches weekly, professional music lessons
  • Communicates with clients directly for short-term scheduling (e.g., instructor or client's rescheduling / cancellation)
  • Secures a location to teach (home-studio, church facility, or other), travels to clients' homes, and/or provides virtual lessons

* SC Music Lessons pays the fee upfront. After a student is placed with an instructor, the one-time background check fee is then deducted from the instructor’s first submitted invoice (not to exceed $60).

Can I keep my own students or work for other companies?

Absolutely! One of the benefits of being an independent contractor is the ability to create your own work schedule. As a result, contract instructors may take any outside jobs; however, opportunities provided for contract instructors may be suspended if outside employment interferes in any way with the services that SC Music Lessons provides to its clients.

What is the pay to teach?

Since we have decreased overhead (primarily by eliminating rent), our instructors are able to be paid well! Currently, instructors make 80% of tuition. The remaining 20% covers business expenses and responsibilities.

Additionally, since instructors are not teaching in a "brick and mortar" location, each instructor has more flexibility and is able to teach in a quiet environment (not "competing" with other lessons happening simultaneously).

What are the requirements to apply?

✓ Education and Experience
All SC Music Lessons instructors must either hold a college degree in music or have taught for 4+ years. Additionally, each instructor must be willing to have SC Music Lessons run their background check.
✓ Video Submission
Instructors must email a short video submission of them playing their respective instrument.
✓ References
Potential instructors must provide contact information (phone and email) for 2 references who can attest specifically to your ability to teach music.
