Dean first figured out the joy of music when as a kid he discovered how fun it was to beat out rhythms on anything he could get his hands on. Soon after, he officially began his journey as a musician when his parents purchased him a violin and signed him up for private lessons. Throughout elementary and middle school, Dean played in the school's strings classes and eventually played in the Beaufort Symphony Youth Orchestra. Later, Dean became interested in the world of improvised music, and his attention switched from the violin to the mandolin and guitar as he became immersed in the styles of bluegrass, rock, world music and jazz. Dean received a B.A in music with a concentration in Jazz Performance from the College of Charleston. During his four years studying music in Charleston he became immersed in the Charleston music scene. He has played a wide variety of gigs, from jazz ensembles and backing local hip-hop artists to playing in the pit orchestra for several musicals. In addition to teaching private lessons, Dean currently teaches high school and middle school music classes full-time at a private school in Beaufort, as well as playing multiple gigs a week in both Beaufort and Charleston. |
