As a young girl, Abby began fiddling on a black, upright Yamaha piano that was passed down from her Great-great grandmother. Abby regularly held “concerts” for her family in the dining room, banging on the keys and pretending she had just composed a great masterpiece for her audience. Through the persuasion of her grandmother, Abby started taking piano lessons at the age of 9 and eventually found herself at the School of the Arts playing real concerts for her family in a recital hall. 

Abby graduated from the College of Charleston in Spring 2021 receiving a B.A. in Music with a concentration in Music Theory and Composition. Throughout college, she studied Jazz and Classical piano and composed multiple works for student-held concerts. In January 2021, Abby had the opportunity to compose an original piano composition for the Halsey Institute’s project “Displacements” where she was able to personally perform and record her piece. She currently teaches piano and gigs around Charleston! ​

Abby's Teaching Style

In the beginning, I focus a lot on Music Theory and the importance of understanding this as a learning musician. I believe any type of growth or accomplishment in a lesson should be celebrated and sometimes achieving small goals can be the greatest motivator towards continuing piano. It’s easy to get bogged down and overwhelmed when learning a new instrument, so I always try to emphasize and remind my students: The reason we play music is because we love it!
